Ameku MD: Dr Detective (Episode 1)

This weekend, I started the anime “Ameku MD: Doctor Detective,” a medical drama centered around uncovering the causes of mysterious, unexplainable symptoms. Right away, the premise reminded me of another, older TV drama, “House MD” which became famous for executing a similar idea. Additionally, the eccentric, impersonable main character, Dr. Ameku Takao, felt similar to Dr. House, although without the limp and excessive vicodin use.

This episode, named, “Dr Sherlock,” served to introduce the series’ Sherlock Holmes, Dr Takao, the director of the investigative medicine unit at Ameku Hospital, and her loyal, albeit reluctant, John Watson, Yu Takanashi. Starting the series off at the end of Dr Takanashi’s ER shift, Dr Takao is quick to steal the show when she immediately solves all his cases with just a look-over at their charts, person, and possessions, demonstrating her prowess in both medicine and investigation. The boy who had been bedridden with unexplainable nausea, migraines, pain, and diarrhea had hypervitaminosis A (excessive amounts of vit A in the body), while the older man suffering with severe abdominal pain had Anisalciasis (parasitic infection that occurs after ingestion of parasitic worms, usually from raw meats such as fish).

The real interesting part of the episode, however, came with the death of a man with blue blood. After failing to resuscitate a man who’s left leg had been what seemed like bitten off only minutes earlier, Dr. Takanashi discovered that he had been bleeding blue blood. The rest of the episode then centers around Dr. Takao and Takanashi as they attempt to figure out what exactly had happened to the man, much to the chagrin of the law enforcement and hospital higher ups.

Overall, discovering this show has been exciting as I’d wished for an animated medical drama to be produced for years. I especially love medical detective shows like House MD as it puts my medical knowledge to the test, and educates me on the etiology and pathology of rare diseases and conditions I’d never have heard about otherwise. That is why, although I tend to consume media like I do air, I will try and pace myself to a single episode a day (keyword: try).
